Driver's Licence Translation Checklist
Everything you need to know about translating your foreign licence for Australian roads.
Requirements for Australia
Every state and territory in Australia has slightly different rules, but generally, if your licence is not in English, you must carry an International Driving Permit (IDP) or an English translation of your licence. If you use a translation, authorities typically require it to be certified by a NAATI-accredited translator. Since rules can change, we strongly encourage you to review the official Austroads guidelines for visiting drivers and check your specific state's rules. For temporary visitors, obtaining an IDP in your home country before travelling can often be a cost-effective option.
Checklist Before You Order
- Check Expiry Date: Your foreign licence must be current and valid. Translators cannot translate expired licences as valid ones.
- Scan Both Sides: When submitting your licence for translation, ensure you scan or photograph both the front and back clearly. Often, endorsement classes or conditions are printed on the back.
- Confirm ID Spelling: Provide us with the exact English spelling of your name as it appears on your passport or Australian visa so the translation matches your other ID perfectly.
Converting to an Australian Licence
If you intend to stay or become a resident, you will eventually need to convert your overseas licence to an Australian state licence (e.g., VicRoads, Service NSW). The timeframe and requirements vary significantly by state. Before ordering a translation, check your state transport authority's website for their specific procedures. Some authorities may accept an IDP, while others won't.
Important: Some states like NSW have a list of approved providers, once we can't help you with driver's license in NSW, we may help you convert your driver's license in remaining states.
If your state authority does require an independent professional translation of your licence and accepts any NAATI-certified translation, we can provide the necessary translation.
